The Do’s and Don’ts of Flossing
Mastering the Art of Flossing for a Healthier Smile

Hello Capilli Dental Community,
Welcome back to the Quick Tips Series: 5-Minute Dental Wisdom, where we break down essential oral care habits into easy, actionable steps. This time, we’re focusing on a crucial yet often neglected step in oral hygiene—flossing.
Done correctly, flossing helps prevent gum disease, cavities, and bad breath by removing plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
The Do’s of Flossing
✅ Floss Daily – Make flossing a part of your daily routine to prevent plaque buildup.
Even if you brush thoroughly, your toothbrush can’t reach between teeth effectively.
✅ Use the Right Technique – Gently slide the floss between your teeth, curve it around each tooth in a C-shape, and move it up and down. Avoid snapping it against your gums.
✅ Be Gentle – Flossing too aggressively can damage gum tissue. If your gums bleed at first, don’t worry—this usually stops as they become healthier with regular flossing.
✅ Choose the Right Floss – Use traditional string floss, floss picks, or even a water flosser based on what feels most comfortable for you.
The Don’ts of Flossing
❌ Don’t Skip Flossing – Brushing alone only cleans about 60% of your teeth’s surfaces. The spaces between your teeth need attention too!
❌ Don’t Reuse Floss – Used floss can reintroduce bacteria into your mouth. Always use a fresh section for each tooth.
❌ Don’t Rush It – Take your time to floss properly; rushing through it can leave plaque behind.
❌ Don’t Ignore Signs of Trouble – Persistent bleeding or pain while flossing could indicate gum disease. If issues persist, consult your dentist.
